"Friendly" Florida Bank of America Denies Service to Man With No Arms

TAMPA, Fla. -- A man born without arms is upset that a bank would not allow him to cash a check without having a thumbprint.

Steve Valdez said a Bank of America branch in downtown Tampa would not allow him to cash a check from his wife last week. The bank said since he didn't have an account, he would need to provide a thumbprint.

Valdez has prosthetic arms and is unable to be fingerprinted. He said he presented two forms of ID but was still denied.

He said a bank manager told him he could either come back to the bank with his wife or open an account himself.

A Salt Lake City woman who held a Guinness World Record for her long fingernails before they broke off in a car crash says it was the most dramatic event of her life. But Lee Redmond, who lost the fingernails in February, says it's now much easier to do things and her hands seem to fly with the weight of the nails gone.

The 68-year-old won't grow her nails out again, saying it took 30 years the first time and she may not live for another 30.

Redmond hadn't cut her nails since 1979 and entered the Guinness World Records book in 2002 for longest fingernails on a woman.

The Guinness Web site says her nails measured a total of more than 28 feet long in 2008, with the longest nail on her right thumb at 2 feet, 11 inches.

The homeless man with the overgrown toenails doesn't seek any world or other records. He wants a good pair of toenail clippers and a warm place to sleep in the winter.

The photo of one of his feet was taken by a fellow homeless friend who mistakenly believed it would make a good example for commercials advertising toe nail clippers and for dermatologists. Several Los Angeles dermatologists and pedicurists said they would refuse to treat the homeless man because he would drive away other patients.

An alleged phantom animal that kills goats and then drinks their blood (see photo) is being stuffed by a Texas taxidermist. Seldom seen, and vaguely resembling a coyote but with a much larger mouth and large fangs, many believe in the existence of chupacabras but there have been few if any confirmed sightings. A pair of rural Deputy Sherrifs captured pictures of the alleged animal with their squad car's webcam and aver they never have seen anything like it. The taxidermist won't commit himself to an identification, saying only that it vaguely resembles a deformed coyote. The animal has no hair or fur, except for small tufts around the ankles.

Police say the 61-year-old man, annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a Wal-Mart slapped the toddler in the face several times at a suburban Atlanta Wal-Mart after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.

A police report says after the man hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."

Authorities say Stephens then grabbed the 2-year-old and slapped her. The child began screaming and Stephens was arrested. Police say an examination showed the girl's face was slightly red.

A call to the girl's mother, identified in the police report as Sonya Mathews of Grayson, was answered by a woman who identified herself as Sabrina Mathis, the victim's aunt.

Mathis said Wednesday that the girl is doing fine.

"As of today, she has really forgotten about it," Mathis said. "She's been playing."

Mathis said the girl's mother was shaken up over the incident.

"She's as well as to be expected," Mathis said. "Right now she's just trying to calm.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton allegedly was informed of the actions and the existence of the photos. No indication of any disciplinary actions by the military or the state department have been released as of this writing.

GRANITE CITY A pantless man led Granite City police on a chase Sunday afternoon that hit speeds of nearly 100 mph, authorities said Monday.

Arrested after the chase was Matthew Cooper, 26, of the 4000 block of Central Lane, Pontoon Beach. On Monday, Madison County prosecutors charged him with a felony, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, as well as misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was being held at the Granite City police station, with bond set at $25,000.

The incident began at 1 p.m. Sunday when Granite City police got a slew of calls that a man who was naked from the waist down was lying face-down in a pickup with the door open near the corner of East 21st Street and Edwardsville Road, said police Maj. Jeff Connor.

When officers approached, the pickup sped off. The chase began at low speeds but hit nearly 100 mph when the pickup drove on Illinois Route 3, Connor said.

When the pickup approached the closed McKinley Bridge, the driver tried to drive around a barricade, hit a squad car, went off on a dirt road and got stuck in mud, police said.

The pickup driver refused to get out of the truck, and officers used a Taser to subdue him, Connor said.

Pantless man accused of harassing neighbor's horse

A man who apparently wasn't wearing pants has been accused of harassing a neighbor's horse. The Tri-City Herald reported the horse's owner spotted a bald man without any pants chasing the horse about 3:30 a.m. Friday in a corral. Benton County sheriff's deputies identified a 26-year-old man, who lives next door, as the suspect and he was jailed for investigation of trespassing.

Deputies also were called to the home Thursday evening when the owner saw the same bald man scaring the horse enough to break through an electrical and barb-wire fence. He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue shorts at the time.
