Brazil Hookers Learn English For World Cup

SAO PAULO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Prostitutes in the Brazilian city of B elo Horizonte are signing up in droves for free language classes in order to be ready for a barrage of foreign visitors to the tropical country during the 2014 soccer World Cup.

The women join many others in Brazilian society, from politicians to construction workers, who are racing the clock to prepare 12 host cities throughout the nation for the international soccer championship.

"When all this chatter about being ready for the World Cup started last year, we decided the women needed to be prepared for it too," Cida Vieira, president of the Minas Gerais state Association of Prostitutes, told Reuters on Tuesday.  Viera pointed out that there was a special language understood by both prostitutes and Johns, as their customers are called.  The prostitutes need to be familiar with such terms as 'blow job,' 'around the world' and 'golden showers' to avoid misunderstandings

The group has solicited volunteers to teach English, Spanish and even Portuguese, she said, explaining that some of the city's sex workers are immigrants who needed to learn Brazil's primary language.
Vieira said demand for the classes could surpass the 300 women who originally expressed interest, with calls coming in from as far away as Sao Paulo, about 509 km (316 miles) from Belo Horizonte.
"This is important for the dignity of the work, the women need to be able to negotiate a fair price and defend themselves," she said.

Russian "Ride" Runs Amok, One Dead

MOSCOW :  It was supposed to be a thrilling ride down a ski slope inside a giant inflatable ball,  known as a zorb, that is to be one of the symbols of next year's Winter Olympics.  The symbol was a giant flop as it killed one and seriously injured two Russian men inside.



The transparent plastic ball veered off course and sailed over a ledge in the rugged Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia. The ball picked up speed as it hurtled down the steep slope, rolling and bouncing wildly.

In a monumental understatement, a Russian Olympic official, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "This pretty much spells the end for the use of the zorb as a tourist attraction at the Winter Olympics.  Not many people will want to ride a "death" machine rolling down a mountain."

Sweden seeks 2 Britons for smuggling garlic

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish prosecutors have issued international arrest warrants for two Britons suspected of masterminding a smuggling ring involving over a ton of Chinese garlic.

The men first shipped the garlic to Norway by boat, where it entered the country duty-free since it was considered to be in transit, prosecutor Thomas Ahlstrand said Wednesday. They then drove the approximately 1.2 tons of garlic across the expansive Norwegian-Swedish border, avoiding customs checks and thus Swedish import duties.

Ahlstrand said the men avoided some ¬10 million ($13.1 million) in Swedish taxes through the scheme. A lengthy police investigation led to the identification of the two British allegedly behind the Swedish operation, which took place in 2009-2010.

It was not the first time smugglers have shown a preference for garlic from China, which accounts for nearly 80 percent of world output and is often significantly cheaper than local varieties.
In 2010, Polish authorities seized six containers with 144 tons of Chinese garlic that had been smuggled into the country via the Netherlands.

Swiss court wipes slate clean on ancient farm debt

GENEVA (AP) — A Swiss court has wiped out an annual debt that farmers have had to pay the Catholic Church to atone for a crime 655 years ago.

Swiss public broadcaster RTS says a court in the northeastern canton (state) of Glarus ruled that the current farm owner no longer has to pay 70 Swiss francs ($76) each year because Swiss mortgage reforms in the mid-19th century made the practice invalid.

The broadcaster reported Tuesday the court sided with the landowner in a dispute with the church after he refused to make the annual payment for oil and candles.

The payments had been a tradition since 1357, when a man named Konrad Mueller killed a man named Heinrich Stucki. To atone, Mueller promised to always pay to keep an eternal lamp lit.

Cameroon judge frees 2 men Imprisoned for looking gay

DOUALA, Cameroon (AP) — A court has overturned the conviction of two men who were sentenced to five years in prison for "looking gay" and ordering Bailey's Irish Cream liquor.

The Court of Appeals Monday acquitted the men and ordered their release. The two men had already spent more than a year in jail where they were subjected to abuse from guards and other prisoners, according to human rights advocates.

The new ruling has been hailed by human rights lawyers and gay rights advocates who urged PresidentPaul Biya to release all other prisoners found guilty under the country's harsh anti-gay laws.

On December 17, a Cameroonian court upheld the five-year-sentence of another man, Roger Jean-Claude Mbede, who was convicted of sending a text message that said "I love you" to another man.

Shit Happens - Literally, to Chicago Woman

An unidentified man riding the Blue Line of a Chicago Transit Authority train in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago, allegedly hit a fellow passenger with a sock full of human feces, the Pioneer Local reports.

“He had a sock full of his poop on me,” said the 21-year-old college student. “It was everywhere; on my face, my hair, my clothes.”

The woman screamed and followed the man, but the attacker escaped. She was riding an east-bound train from Oak Park to Chicago when the foul act occurred. The victim, who did not want to be identified, said she noticed the attacker when he boarded the train car with her but did not perceive him as a threat. She sat down and began texting on her phone. But, at the next stop, the man assaulted her with the sock full of feces.

“I don’t know why he did it,” she said, adding, “I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have done that to a guy.”

Gun Fails, Criminal Still Alive

Loganville, Ga. mom shoots intruder five times, saves her two children, intruder survives

A Loganville, Ga. mother of two saved her own life and those of her nine-year-old twins when she shot an intruder five times, The Blaze reported on Saturday, Jan 5 . The woman and her children were unharmed.

According to local television station WSB-TV , the woman was home alone with her twins when the doorbell rang. When she did not answer, the man went back to his car and returned with a crowbar.

The suspect, who has been identified as Paul Slater, attempted to enter the home using the crowbar on the home office window. The woman grabbed her children, her phone, her gun, and ran upstairs as Slater began searching the house. Eventually, Paul Slater found the woman and her children.

“The perpetrator opens the door and finds himself staring at her, her two children and a .38 revolver,” said Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman.

The woman then shot Slater five times, but he survived. Sheriff Chapman said the woman ran out of bullets but threatened to shoot Paul Slater again if he moved.

Donnie Herman, the woman’s husband said:

“My wife is a hero. She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do as a responsible, prepared gun owner. “  Mr. Herman is opposed to gun controls.

After shooting Paul Slater, the woman took her children and ran to a neighbor’s home. Slater attempted to flee, but his car crashed into a wooded area and he collapsed in a nearby driveway, Sheriff Chapman said. Paul Slater was taken to an area hospital with punctured lungs, a punctured liver, and a punctured stomach. Slater has reportedly been arrested six times since 2008.
