Possum Drop No. Carolina: Redneck Paradise

NC judge rules against New Year's Eve possum drop

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A possum drop that attracts thousands of people to a tiny town in western North Carolina each New Year's Eve may have had its last hurrah after a judge ruled Tuesday that a state agency didn't have the authority to issue a permit for the event.
"Citizens are prohibited from capturing and using wild animals for pets or amusement," Judge FredMorrison wrote in his ruling. "Hunters must afford wild animals the same right Patrick Henry yearned for: 'Give me liberty, or give me death!"
The ruling would end a 19-year tradition of suspending a possum in a see-through box covered with holiday tinsel and lowering it to the ground at midnight. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had sued the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, which issues the permit for the event, saying it's illegal and cruel.
The commission has 30 days to appeal Morrison's decision to Superior Court. A spokesman said the agency will decide whether to appeal after reviewing the 18-page ruling.
Clay Logan, who owns Logan Corner store, manages the event, which attracts 2,000 to 3,000 people annually to the tiny hamlet. The commission "had no authority to issue any permit to Logan for the unlawful public display of a native wild animal" at the drop, Morrison wrote.

A woman was taken into custody after she was allegedly caught masturbating in a Florida Starbucks and, when cops came, they found a glass pipe with cocaine residue in her purse.
Um, have you heard of anything more disturbing? I can't imagine this woman doing something so stupid and gross, and in a public place, no less!
Other customers wanted to know what she was drinking at Starbucks.

Chop, Chop - No Credit Cards Accepted

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut say a man stole a car used to deliver Chinese food and continued dropping off orders so he could keep the customers' money.
Keith Hinds was charged on Friday with larceny, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and other drug charges.
It was not known Monday morning if the 45-year-old Hinds is represented by a lawyer.
West Hartford police received a call from a Chinese food delivery driver reporting that his car had been stolen after he left it idling to run into a school.
The driver also called his boss so customers could be notified that their orders were stolen with the car. Police say one of the orders was delivered after the car was taken.  The delivery car was of Korean manufacture.
Hinds was held on $5,000 bond.  When arrested Hinds was still eating an order of Moo Goo Gai Pan.

CHILI, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say a truck carrying nearly 40,000 pounds of frozen chicken went up in flames on its way to a supermarket in the New York town of Chili (CHEYE'-lye).
Fire officials tell the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester (http://on.rocne.ws/UzlUo0) that the truck was hauling chicken from Mississippi to the Wegmans Distribution Center just southwest of Rochester.
The truck driver wasn't injured. Part of the highway was closed early Friday while crews cleaned up.  Several spectators arrived with bottles of BBQ sauce but were not permitted to approach the wreck.
