They Kill Horses Don't They?

March 17, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Horse racing has long withstood the deaths of its skittish, injury-prone thoroughbreds. Hollywood proved it lacks the stomach for it.

HBO abruptly cancelled its racetrack drama series "Luck" this past week after three horses used in the production were injured and euthanized during 10 months of filming in the last two years.

The abrupt fall of "Luck," which will end its single-season run on March 25, reveals the chasm between the racing and entertainment industries.

At the track, a horse puts its life on the line so gamblers can stake $2 or more to win, place or show, with the industry and fans accepting the danger to animals and jockeys as a harsh part of the bargain.

Jail Inmate Asserts Constitutional Right To Veiw Porn In Jail

Jail inmate: Lack of porn violates US Constitution

Jul 03 2011 09:13PM CST

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. — A Michigan jail inmate says he's being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment because he can't have pornography.

In a handwritten lawsuit, 21-year-old Kyle Richards claims his civil rights are being violated at the Macomb County Jail. Richards says denying his request for erotic material subjects him to a "poor standard of living" and "sexual and sensory deprivation."

The Michigan Department of Corrections did inform The Detroit News that prisons allow some pornographic material, though it's banned at the jail. The American Civil Liberties Union says prisons have a lot of leeway.

If porn will keep the inmates quiet and reduce the incidence of prison rape, it is a good, low cost correctional tool. Whacking off in the privacy of one's own cell reduces tension and thus stems violence, one of prisons' biggest problems.

Richards was charged with bank robbery after police followed a trail of snowy footprints and dropped money to his apartment from a bank robbery scene in January in Fraser, north of Detroit. He is clearly dumb and porn might help keep him from thinking, a dangerous activity for him.

Richards pleaded guilty. Sentencing is Aug. 2.

Lawyer Screws Client's Wife - Suspended for Three Years

A Michigan lawyer receives a three-year suspension for having sex with his client's wife.

Gregory A. Mikat of Fenton, was accused of having an affair with the wife of a man he represented in a separate maintenance action she had filed against his client and then failing to disclose the relationship when his client sought his advice about his suspicions that his wife was being unfaithful.

The client only found out about the relationship after seeking the advice of another lawyer, who hired a private investigator who confirmed the man's suspicions.

Mikat's three-year suspension by the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board was upped considerably from the 179-day suspension previously imposed on the lawyer by a hearing panel, the Legal Profession Blog reported.

In its opinion (PDF), the discipline board cited what it said were two aggravating factors that apparently were overlooked by the hearing panel: the emotional vulnerability of Mikat's client, who had tearfully come to him for advice about his suspicions that his wife was having an affair; and Mikat's apparent inability or refusal to acknowledge the wrongful nature of his conduct.

It cited Mikat's testimony at a hearing before the hearing panel in which he apologized both to his client and to his client's wife, whom he said he may have hurt more than the client.

"With this statement, respondent demonstrated yet again that the loyalty he should have owed to his former client was overshadowed by his feelings for his client's wife," the board wrote in its opinion.

The board also ordered Mikat to pay his former client $5,000 in restitution.

The case was one of two disciplinary actions reported this week on the Legal Profession Blog concerning lawyers accused of having sex with their clients' wives. In the other case, the South Carolina Supreme Court issued an anonymous admonition to a unidentified lawyer who admitted having an affair with the wife of a man he represented in three legal matters and stated that having a sexual relationship with the spouse of a current client is a per se ethical violation.

The South Carolina bar, which is comprised mainly of inbreds, according to an anonymous and unverified reporter unfamiliar with the S.C. bar, filed an amicus brief in support of the screwing lawyer.

Really Dumb-Ass Montana Teen

Montana teen accidentally texts sheriff to buy pot

Sep 03 2010

HELENA, Mont. — General rule of thumb: when trying to buy marijuana, don't text the sheriff. Authorities said a Helena teen entered a wrong number and inadvertently sent a message to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton, saying "Hey Dawg, do you have a $20 I can buy right now?"

A detective pretending to be the dealer organized a meeting at a time when the boy knew he and another teen would be at a particular store.

The detective spotted two teenage boys and one of the boy's fathers _ who was unaware of what was going on _ at the store. He called the phone number three times to make sure he had the right person. Dutton said when the detective showed the teens his badge, one of the boys fainted.

No citations were issued after the parents of the boys, who were 15 and 16, got involved. They promised to "whup those boys within an inch of their lives," according to a prerecorded message made by a local radio broadcaster who is friends with the boys' parents. After reviewing the message CPS moved to take the boys into state custody until they reach the age of 18.

Here's Some Hamburger Helper, Honey.

Police jail man for rubbing burger in wife's face

Dec 07 2009

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.— A 25-year-old Port St. Lucie man was arrested for allegedly rubbing a hamburger in his wife's face during an argument. Police said Daniel Boss and his wife got into it late Thursday night and started calling each other names. At some point, the woman apparently poured soda on Boss' hamburger, causing him to grab the sandwich, rub it in her face and start throwing food.

Boss left, but his wife went to the police station to report the incident. Officers arrested him three hours later on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge.

It could not be determined if Boss had an attorney. It also could not be determined if Boss had a brain.

Colorado DMV Gives TOFU an X-rating.

Nice Mom Who Loves Tofu Classified as Obscene by Colorado Officials.

Woman's tofu license plate curdles Colorado

Apr 08 2009 07:22PM CST

One Colorado woman's love for tofu has been judged X-rated by state officials. Kelly Coffman-Lee wanted to tell the world about her fondness for bean curd by picking certain letters for her SUV's license plate. Her suggestion for the plate: "ILVTOFU." But the Division of Motor Vehicles blocked her plan because they thought the combination of letters could be interpreted as profane.

Says Department of Revenue spokesman Mark Couch: "We don't allow 'FU' because some people could read that as street language for sex."

Officials meet periodically to ensure state plates stay free of letters that abbreviate gang slang, drug terms or obscene phrases.

The 38-year-old Coffman-Lee says tofu is a staple of her family's diet because they are vegan and that the DMV misinterpreted her message.

When asked, other disinterested persons had even more forceful derogatory comments to make about the Coloradod DMV, using some of the prohibited letters in the woman's license plate proposal to make their point.

Police cite breast-feeding driver for endangering

Published - Mar 01 2009 06:30AM CST

Police in Ohio say a Buckeye woman has been charged with child endangering after another motorist reported she was both breast-feeding a youngster and talking on a cell phone while driving.

Police in the Dayton suburb of Kettering say the caller told them he saw the woman Thursday. He followed her car for more than 3 miles to make certain what he thought he was seeing was real. He denied being a voyeur.

Officer Burke Buckeye says authorities used a license plate number to track down a 39-year-old woman.

He said the woman admitted the incident and told officers she was breast-feeding and wouldn't let her child go hungry. When asked why she couldn't pull over to the side of the road, the woman reportedly told officers she, too, was hungry and was in a hurry to get to Taco Bell for a 69 cent taco special.

Burke said the legal concern is that the mother had a child in her lap while driving, not that she was breast-feeding in public.

"She can stand in front of City Hall, topless, and nurse her baby if she wants. It's the driving, while talking on a cell phone, and breast-feeding an unrestrained child in her lap that make it a problem," said an unidentified by-stander with no interest in the matter.

He said the child was under 2 years old.

Police say the woman faces up to 180 days in jail and a $1,800 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor. It was not clear how the woman could spend six months in jail without the baby getting hungry. And a $1800 fine, too, makes it a death sentence for the baby due to the cost of formula. State legislators responsible for the law said they did not intend to impose the death penalty on babies for the crimes of their mothers; that would be too harsh and would endanger the child even more said one particularly dim-witted law maker.

Mom Sends 89 year-old Grandma to Jail. Thinks Grandma's Law Suit Silly

BLUE ASH, Ohio(AP) An 89-year-old Cincinnati-area woman arrested for confiscating the neighbor kid's football is now suing the boy's parents. Edna Jester filed a lawsuit in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court claiming she has suffered emotional distress because footballs and other playthings belonging to her next-door neighbors keep landing in her yard.

In October, Jester refused to return a football, was taken to the Blue Ash police station and charged with petty theft. The prosecutor later dropped the case.

The lawsuit against parents Paul and Kelly Tanis seeks unspecified monetary damages.

Kelly Tanis calls the suit "very silly" but says she and her husband also worry because they have five children and can't afford a lawyer.
