Things We Wish We Had Said - First in a Series
Vitas Gerulaitas, an outstanding American tennis player, from Brooklyn, N.Y., was a flamboyant personality who had as much success in the glitterati world of the star tennis players in the world as he did on the court. One time ranked No. 3 in the world, he had lost 16 straight matches to another American tennis star, Jimmy Connors.
Never at a loss for words, at a press conference following his first win over Connors in 17 straight matches, Vitas quipped:
"Let this be a lesson to all of you. No one ever beats Vitas Gerulaitas 17 times in a row."
He died, tragically, at age 40, in an accident.
