Man in Michigan Goes Green For Nature Center
By Alisha Green and the editors of Bizarre Stuff
A zany pet store employee, Sean Murphy, will attempt to stuff 12 Madagascar hissing cockroaches in his mouth and hold them for 10 seconds. He stuffs them in one by one as they hiss. The unhappy creatures will attempt to escape by using the small barbs on the cockroaches' kicking legs, to cut Sean's lip and the inside of his mouth, but Sean doesn't care, he is doing this for a cause.
Sean wants to establish a record in this category for the Guinness Book of World Records and to raise money for a nature center.
Murphy, a pet store employee, will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for holding Madagascar hissing cockroaches in his mouth for 10 seconds on Sunday.
Sean's bizarre attempt will be part of the Halloween Spectacular at Preuss Pets, where he works, to raise money for the Harris Nature Center.
The official Guinness World Record for this feat is six cockroaches, and Sean hopes to officially double that by putting 12 of the warm and fuzzy little insects in his mouth Sunday.
The previous unofficial record was held by Travis Fessler, a 37-year-old member of the Pickled Brothers Sideshow, based in Kentucky, who fit nine of the hissing cockroaches into his mouth in October 2008. Fessler did the stunt to promote a haunted house that benefited a charity called "Shop with a Cop," he said.
"I acknowledge that it was something silly I did, but it was for a charity and to bring attention to the show," he said.
It was not immediately clear what Murphy's girlfriend thought about the prank. Some of Murphy's friends, who requested proximity and solemnity, described Murphy as a "wing-nut", who had previously eaten mice live and a garden snake.
