Sleepwalker Shoots Self in Knee - To Be Charged With Illegal Possession of a Handgun and Felony Aggravated Assault of Self

(AP) Police say a Colorado man who told police he woke up to a "bang" and realized he suffered a gunshot wound to his knee likely shot himself while sleepwalking.

The Daily Camera reports that 63-year-old Sanford Rothman of Boulder told investigators he had no clear recollection of the incident early Tuesday. No one else was in Rothman's home at the time.

Boulder police Sgt. Paul Reichenback, a possible former member of the Nazi SS, says Rothman keeps a 9 mm handgun near his bed and takes prescription medication for pain. Police say no alcohol or illegal drugs played a role in the incident.

According to an anonymous police spokesperson with no knowledge of the facts, Rothman will likely be charged with public possession of a hand gun without a permit and aggravated assault of himself. A veteran attorney said it would be a difficult case to prosecute because the combined assailant/victim could not be compelled to testify against himself and there were no witnesses. Without witnesses it could not be proven that Rothman shot himself, unless he confessed.

Rothman was treated at a hospital and released.
