In the Forest Do Deer Have the Right of Way?

Wis. runner collides with deer during race

Oct 29 2010

APPLETON, Wis. — Sarah Glidden (possible heiress to a paint company family fortune) is one of the few people who can say she collided with a deer _ while on foot. The Hortonville High School sophomore was running at a cross country sectional at Wausau's 9-Mile County Forest course on Oct. 22 when an antlerless deer bolted from the woods at a marked deer crossing.

With about 100 meters to go, Glidden was partially spun around by the collision but managed to maintain her balance. She kept running and so did the deer.

The 15-year-old said she felt fur on her leg but she only has a bruise.

She failed to qualify for the state meet, placing 18th overall. She told The Post-Crescent in Appleton she's not sure how much it affected her. But her time of 15:55 was 17 seconds slower than a few weeks ago.

The deer beat her to the finish line but had not officially entered the race so it did not qualify either.

The deer appeared chagrined by the incident and was caught by a photographer's lens, hiding in the underbrush and looking out to see what happened.

Glidden was not cited by state police for failing to yield the right of way at a marked deer crossing because there were no injuries to the animal and because Glidden failed to qualify, bringing heartache and sadness to a tender young woman.

  1. What about the feelings of the deer? It was minding its own business, traveling on a protected deer trail and trying to keep the peace. Now everyone wants to make this Sarah out to be a poor young girl who got disappointed. This is so homocentric that it is disgusting to read.
